Transportation Update

Marine - The OTHER transportation alternative

When moving materials, project managers consider trucking and railcars and all but forget there is another alternative - marine vessels.  Managers lack contacts or accurate information and assume that a marine option is not viable.  In point of fact, the larger the volume and/or the greater the distance, the better marine transportation looks.  And the best contact to call to find out about the possibility of marine transportation is Miller Associates.

Consider the following options when searching for ways to move your material:

  • The larger the amount of cargo that can be carried at a single time means the lowest cost.

  • The greater the distance the cargo will be transported favors the larger volume per voyage of a marine transportation system.

  • Physical factors at the load port and dock and the discharge port to consider are (a)minimum water depth or draft, (b)Horizontal clearances or width of bridge or canal passages that marine vessels will have to pass through, and (c)Vertical clearances between the water's and any structures such as a bridge.

Miller Associates has been in business over 25 years assisting clients in finding marine transportation.  We specialize in helping our clients every step of the way from determining alternatives to docking at the destination.

Our interest in Request for Proposals and Procurements is to act as non-prime contractors to provide transportation, our specialty being marine.  Unlike other brokers however we assist wherever is needed to conclude the deal.  This task involves announcing contracts available, finding ultimate destinations and in particular relaying knowledge and information to those who can put it to BUSINESS use.  After all the ultimate goal is to do BUSINESS.

We have worked on or participated in Requests for Proposals on environmental items such as:

  • Dredge Spoils

  • Non-contaminated fill material

  • Subtitle D industrial waste
